Red River 17ers
By now we should all be well into physical preparation for the Red River Trip. Activities at this elevation will be much more difficult for all that are participating. Remember, we live at 650 feet above sea level. Our base camp is at 9,600 feet above sea level. Wheeler Peak is 13,161 feet and our lowest elevation for the trip will be 7,000 feet above sea level. This hike is an intermediate hike, but parts of it will feel like expert terrain. Preparation is the key to success!
To help, we should all be cutting back on caffeine. Our hiking boots or shoes should fit properly and be well broken in. Start wearing them now! Walking, more walking and then some more walking. Walking on the local track, walking on a thread-mill or using your stair master is good, but it wont get you there. Go outside, walk around the neighborhood. Hike up and down the streets. We should all be able to do 3-5 miles with a 10 pound day pack (water, lunch, rain gear) without stopping. Today is a good day to start. Tomorrow is a holiday, get mom, dad, brother and sister to go with you on these hikes. Get some fresh air, expand your lungs and enjoy their company. You have only a few days left to prepare, so get out there and get it done!
Thank you,
Mr. Rekieta
