After a month of COVID-19 quarantine, Scouting is still going strong here at Troop 17 and around the globe. If you havent joined us on our virtual troop meetings on Tuesdays, I would strongly encourage you to attend to check in on your friends, and let us check in with you. Over the last several weeks, weve had guest speakers covering merit badges you can work on at home, had patrol meetings to work on advancement, saw a variety of virtual backgrounds, played a few games, and even watched two scouts get home haircuts (you couldnt look away because you just knew at any minute something could have gone horribly wrong!). We have a paid Zoom account so you can use your computer or phone to join us, or simply dial into the conference number. We start at 7:30 every Tuesday, just like we do in person. The conference information is on our online calendar. Id like to cover some common questions that we get in our meetings, in case your scouts havent passed on this information... For summer events, both the Longhorn Council and Philmont have set May 1st as their target decision date to determine how to proceed this summer. At this point, the expectation is that both The Big Adventure at Worth Ranch and Philmont Treks will still be held. Ive also been posting updates on Philmont to our Philmont Prep blog for those signed up. On rank advancement, patrol leaders check in with the scouts every meeting in the patrol meeting but each scout can continue to work on advancement while at home. Parents are welcome to sign off on the scouts achievement. If there are questions about meeting some of the requirements, the scout can check with their patrol leader first, then Mr. Lyles, via email to the advancement or scoutmaster address, if needed. For boards of review and scoutmaster conferences, please email the advancement or scoutmaster address. Mr. Lyles and I will contact you to schedule those with some of the other adults, again via our Zoom account. Scouts, you can anticipate that the fall will be very busy with events outside of Scouting. I would encourage everyone to attend our weekly meetings and to work on advancement now, while many other events are being postponed. Please dont hesitate to send me any additional questions and well see each again on Tuesday. Mr. Turner
