Scouts,
In observance of the 4th of July Holiday, we will not meet this evening.
Please remember that our final Scout/parent Kandersteg meeting will be tomorrow, July 5, 6:30-7:30PM at scout hut. Please bring all of your gear and travel bags for inspection and parents can get any final questions answered. Also, if your scout needs to take medicine of any kind or needs an epi-pen, please be prepared to speak to adult leaders about those needs so we are all clear on how your scouts medication will be administered. Gate and gate number for trip departure at DFW should be known by this meeting.
Departure procedures - arrive at DFW airport at 1:00PM on Saturday July 8 in preparation for AA flight 70 DFW to FRA. We will meet as a troop in the terminal and line up at the AA counter together. You will need to stay with your scout until we get everyone a ticket, have their passport checked, and their bag is taken by AA. Once this is complete, you may leave, and we will proceed through security as a troop. Mr. Clark Sykes (younger scouts) and Mr. Dan Turner (older scouts) are co-leaders during departure and parents should not leave until checking with them.
Class A uniforms - including socks and neckerchiefs will be worn on travel days - this means they must be in Class As when you arrive at DFW. They will wear Class As at the final campfire and then on departure day back home. There are no exceptions to this policy so please make sure you have checked this before you head to DFW airport.
Alcohol, tobacco, vapes - regardless of the laws of any country Troop 17 will be in, the Troop 17 rule of absolutely no alcohol, tobacco, or vapes of any kind will be enforced. Breaking this rule will not be tolerated and are grounds for trip expulsion at your expense. Please make sure you and your scout have communicated about this before departure to avoid any issues.
Phones - due to our international travel, need for entertainment on the long airplane ride, and ability to take pictures, the troop is allowing mobile phones to be carried on the trip and to be used at appropriate times. If you allow your scout to bring a phone, please be aware that charging will require a European adaptor and that roaming charges may be applied by your carrier when not using wifi on airplane mode. Adult leaders are not responsible for monitoring how your scouts phone connects (wifi vs cellular roaming) so please make sure you and your scout are clear on these issues.
Spending money - as was mentioned several months ago, your scout should have a minimum of $200 for spending money to cover incidentals (drinks, snacks, forgotten sunscreen) and any souvenirs (hats, shirts, fine Swiss watches etc). There are multiple ways to have your scout bring that money, including: 1) many places in Switzerland take credit cards and debit cards, so if your scout already has one, they can use those cards. 2)Talk to your bank about getting a prepaid debit/credit card - kind of like a gift card that is a Visa or Master Card preloaded with money. 3) You can try to get some Swiss Francs here before the trip. 4)You can send your scout with US dollars in cash to exchange at the airport or a bank. We cant promise when we will have an opportunity to exchange money while we are in transit so it may not be the first day. Finally, adult leaders are bringing our personal credit cards and bank debit cards so we will have everything covered in case of an issue.
Pick-up procedures - you will use one of these three options based on what you told us:
Kandersteg pick up is by noon at the camp on Saturday July 15 Frankfurt airport pick up is approximately 8:00AM on Sunday July 16 (location and exact time will be better known when we get closer to Frankfurt airport) DFW pick up, track AA flight 71 for exact time and gate number on Sunday July 16
Communication during trip - we will have a central Kandersteg Troop 17 email box for questions and messages during trip at kisc2023@troop17.net. For urgent matters our designated Troop 17 representative in the US will be Mr. Ken Rekieta. His mobile number is (817) 821-5199. When you call, be aware he may not immediately pick up an unknown number, but leave a message and he will return the call promptly. Mr. Rekieta will handle all urgent communication with Kandersteg adult leaders as necessary during the trip.
