At the Scout meeting on Tuesday, I announced that online signups were open for Philmont 2013. We have been blessed with 3 treks of 12 people each for 2013. We have 39 Scouts that will be age eligible for the 2013 trek. This is the largest group we have ever taken to Philmont. Our treks are June 28th - July 13th, 2013. What is Philmont? Philmont Scout Ranch is one of three high adventure Boy Scout of America camps. With more than 214 square miles of rugged northern New Mexico Wilderness, Scouts and Adults participate in backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs. Since 1938 more than 950,000 participants have stayed in 34 different staffed camps and 55 trail camps along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails. Sound fun yet? Ask anyone that has been - it is an amazing experience. Requirements? All youth participants must be at least 14 years old and a 1st Class Scout or higher when they arrive at Philmont. Adult advisors must be at least 21 years of age. Everyone must be active, registered members of the Troop. Everyone must also be physically capable of hiking and camping in Philmonts high mountains for the length of the expedition. This can be very demanding, especially for us "older" Scouters. Cost? Based on our historic costs and the registration costs paid to Philmont, the anticipated cost per participant will be $900. A lot of this can be offset with fundraising! We need a $100 deposit paid to the Troop by October 16th. This will hold your trek request. Next steps? Read the Philmont Risk Advisory located at http://www.troop17.net/docs_public/philmont_risk_advisory.asp. Register for a slot at http://www.troop17.net/management/menunew.asp?page=eventregister. Select "Register", pick Philmont 2013 Requests and specify adult or Scout. Bring a check for $100 to the next Scout meeting. Start your workout program! We will have more information online soon! Thanks, Mr. Turner
