For those headed to Philmont in the morning, please be sure to bring your signed permission slip (available at http://forms.troop17.net). Please remember that you are representing the Troop not only at Philmont, but to and from the facility. Have a fun and safe trip! Next Tuesday, we will have our normal Scout meeting but with the crews at Philmont and many people on vacation (including me), I expect it will be a smaller group than normal. Mr. Lyles will be there and has a treat planned for those in attendance. July 4th is another flag fundraiser day. With many people out of town, we will definitely need anyone that is in town to help put up and take down flags in the Tanglewood neighborhood. We meet at 7am and 7pm on Sweetbriar Lane in class B uniforms. Put it in your calendar now! We are looking at adding an overnight trip to Enchanted Rock in late July. More information on that as we firm up plans. Merit Badges The summer is a great opportunity to get some merit badges completed. Our troop website has the full list of merit badges and links to their requirements. I have also listed the Troop counselor for each badge. Take a look at the list and see what might interest you. If there is not a counselor listed, please see me or Mr. Lyles and we will find one for you. Here are some notes about a couple of badges... From Mrs. Smith...Calling all thespians or scouts somewhat interested in exploring the theatrical arts! I am a merit badge counselor for the Theater MB and have some opportunities available for scouts wanting to complete the Theater merit badge. There is a workshop on Sunday, June 30th from 12:15-1:15pm (repeated again in late July) at the Scott Theatre in the Fort Worth Community Arts Center in association with Kids Who Care theatre company. It should be fun, informative, and meets some requirements and there is a 2:00 performance of Peter Pan following the workshop. To complete this merit badge, you will need to participate in a theatrical performance possibly through school, church or community opportunities. See http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Theater for complete requirements. Please contact me if you are interested in the workshop or the Theater merit badge. Id love to help you! Melissa Smith 817-996-7797 cell Computer Merit Badge...If you are know anything about computers or would like to know more about computers, I am the Computer Merit Badge counselor for the Troop. There is not much "classroom" work for this MB so we will not have regular classes. I can arrange a couple of demonstrations of various types of computers and a tour of a major computer center (provided none of you are on a watch list!). Let me know if you are interested. Emergency Prep MB...this Eagle Required (optionally replaces Lifesaving) merit badge is not for the faint of heart. If you have some time to invest, this is a great MB. Take a look at the requirements online and see me (I am the counselor) or Mr. Lyles for more information. Cooking...just a reminder that the Cooking MB will be REQUIRED for anyone earning their Eagle rank after December 31st of this year. The BSA is also going overhaul the requirements starting January 1, 2014. We have no idea what will change so you can roll the dice and wait or start it NOW and finish up by the end of the fall. Rumor is that if you do not finish by Dec 31, you will have to start over under the new requirements! See Mr. Goldthwaite (he is the counselor) or Mr. Lyles for more information. Thanks, Mr. Turner
