T17 - Cold Weather

Obviously it will be cold Friday night. For the rookies and a reminder for the veterans, there are several things you can do to stay warm overnight. Wearing dry wool socks and a wool cap even when in your sleeping bag go a long way to stay warm. An extra fleece INSIDE the sleeping bag will also add a layer of insulation. Blankets on top of the sleeping bag actually will crush the sleeping bag and lower its ability to insulate. A thick blanket under the sleeping bag will, however, help insulate against the cold ground. As usual, we only want two people per tent, even in this weather. A good, closed tent, with the rain fly on it will be at least 5 degrees warmer than just being outside. For safety reason, we do not allow any open flames around or inside tents. Chemical hand warmers are fine but they are better for use during the day inside your pockets. Thermals overnight Friday and Saturday during the day will also be helpful. Finally, a good meal before you drop off your camper will help them have enough fuel to help keep the body warm overnight. See you at the scout lodge, Mr. Turner
