It is hard to believe, but two weeks have passed since we returned home from Summer Camp at Worth Ranch. Seems like just yesterday the scouts were trying to clean the watermelon seeds out of their dirty hair. I want to take a minute to recognize a few things that happened while at camp and express gratitude on behalf of the Troop before any more time passes. First I would like to recognize the several scouts that were selected by the Merit Badge Counselors as the top student in their particular Merit Badge Classes: Clay UpchurchNature Henry VirdenShooting Sports Tommy Fahey AND Wyatt ParrishArchery George TowleLifesaving Sam BrownClimbing Congratulations to you all! Next I would like to brag on the entire group as Troop 17 walked away with two other awards as well. The first award is the Top Campsite Award which had several aspects that were inspected and graded daily by independent judges. The judges graded on cleanliness of camp, cleanliness of latrines, camp gadgets (like the giant tower that we built), US flag flying, troop flag flying, etc. Our guys worked together as a team, younger and older scouts, and brought home the gold! And the second group award was the Worth Ranch Honor Unit Award. This is awarded to the most outstanding troop at summer camp and I understand we have been awarded this 7 or 8 years in a row now. Again all of our scouts worked together daily and came away with the top honor at Worth Ranch. Way to go guys!! None of this would have been possible without a great group of dads, some of which have sons that have already aged out of scouts. While at summer camp these men taught First Aid Merit Badge classes, performed Board of Review for advancement, served coffee to adults from other troops, counseled the rookie Scoutmaster, hiked up to Kyle Mountain, drove to Mineral Wells on supply runs and so much more. Thank you to the group of gentlemen below that gave their time and vacation days to help make Summer Camp 2018 a great success for the Boy Scouts of Troop 17: Mr. Key, Mr. Virden, Mr. Upchurch, Dr. Mandel, Mr. Gammell, Mr. Turner, Mr. Lyles, Mr. Smith, Mr. Witt, Mr. Goldthwaite. I would also like to thank the men that helped saw down a trailer load of trees that were used to build tower the Sunday prior to summer camp: Mr. Bogel, Mr. Rekieta, Mr. Fisk, Mr. Taylor, Mr. Lasater, Mr. Gammell Looking forward to a great Summer Camp at Worth Ranch in 2019! Mr. Harveson
