T17-Fundraising

Troop 17 will not have a regular presence working the TCU concession stand this fall football season. We might have the opportunity to fill in as back up help for one or two of the games. We are also looking into the possibility of working some of the TCU basketball games. More on that in the future. As most of you know the main fundraiser for Troop 17 over the past several years has been working the concession stand at TCU football games. This fundraiser has many positives and a few negatives. On the plus side the boys were given the opportunity to manage and operate most aspects of the concession stand, including but not limited to: running the cash register, cash and credit card handling, taking orders, preparing food, delivering orders, inventory counts, face to face customer service, cleaning and sanitizing. They worked as a team, with the support of parent volunteers, game after game to achieve a common goal and counted on each other to perform their duties. In short it was a great opportunity for some real world job experience while at the same time proudly wearing that purple T17 hat and high green socks with red tops and making money for the troop that helps offset your cost of summer camp and other troop expenditures. On the negative sideit requires a lot of people and a lot of time. We have had difficulty the last 2 years properly staffing the stand. It takes about 20 people (12-16 scouts and 4-8 adults) to run the concession stand well. Opening, running, closing and cashing out can last 8-10 hours per game. Factor in that there are 6-7 home football games per season and it starts to dominate a fall calendar and it limits troop camping opportunities. While the TCU concession stand is a great fundraiser I believe we do not have the ability to staff it fully every game AND I think it negatively affects our fall camping schedule. We are looking for other fundraisers to replace TCU football, but in the meantime lets focus on our camping program. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Mr. Harveson
